From Business Problem to Working Model: Gurobi Modeler in Practice
October 7, 2026
9:00 AM AM EDT
What does it look like to put the Gurobi Modeler to work on a real problem?
In this session, we’ll go beyond hypothetical demos and share how the Gurobi team used the Modeler to build two real optimization models: one to support staffing decisions for our Experts Team, and another for a Gurobi Gives Back partner.
We'll cover:
The Modeler workflow
Tips and tricks for using it successfully
What you can do once you have a model you can trust

Steven Edwards
Product Manager

Dr. Steven Edwards completed his PhD at Monash University in the field of discrete optimization. His thesis was motivated by the scheduling of automated pathology testing systems used for the diagnosis of cancers and infectious diseases. As part of his research, he developed a modeling framework for efficiently solving large-scale optimization problems using constraint programming inspired by existing techniques in boolean satisfiability and mixed-integer programming. After completing his thesis, Steven worked briefly at the Australian Bureau of Statistics on optimization problems in data security before commencing as a Research Fellow in Operations Research at the University of Melbourne.
Caroline Weinberg
Manager of Optimization Support

Caroline holds a Master of Business Analytics from MIT Sloan School of Management's Operations Research Center and a B.A. in Mathematics and Economics from Kenyon College. Prior to joining Gurobi, she worked at Pfizer, where she managed cross-functional teams of data scientists and developers to create and deploy custom mathematical optimization solutions for manufacturing operations. Her work involved building optimization models to automate scheduling, improve production planning, manage inventory levels, and reduce material waste. Caroline is passionate about leveraging data science and optimization techniques to solve challenging business problems that drive real impact and value. Outside of her professional work, Caroline enjoys staying active through running, cycling, and hiking. She also has a passion for puzzles, both the jigsaw variety and the New York Times daily games.
Byron Tasseff
Optimization Engineer

Byron holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan. Before joining Gurobi, he led development of optimization and simulation software for front-of-the-meter energy storage at Drive Powerline and Qcells North America. Earlier, as a scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, he built open-source optimization tools for power, natural gas, and water networks; explored quantum annealing for combinatorial optimization; and developed GPU-accelerated hydrodynamic simulations for national flood response. Outside of work, he enjoys writing and recording music.
