Gurobi AI Innovation Lab

AI technology for the most challenging decision problems

Advancing optimization and complementary AI technologies for the most challenging decision problems

At Gurobi, we believe that combining optimization with other AI technologies can unlock breakthroughs that neither approach can achieve on their own. The Gurobi AI Innovation Lab (GAIL) is our dedicated space for exploring scalable, reliable ways to bring this fusion to market.

The Lab is a focused Research & Development initiative that brings together deep technical expertise across optimization and broader AI technologies, rigorous research, and real-world validation to combine multiple approaches, test them in practice, and address complex decision problems under demanding real-world constraints.

The Gurobi AI Innovation Lab is led by Dr. Pascal Van Hentenryck, a pioneer in optimization and AI whose work has shaped both academic research and real-world optimization systems for decades.

Pascal brings deep expertise across optimization, other AI technologies, and complex systems, and he plays a central role in defining the Lab’s direction, focus areas, and standards for impact.

Current Focus Areas

The AI Innovation Lab concentrates on a small number of well-defined focus areas, selected for their technical depth, practical relevance, and long-term importance.

  • AI for Faster and Scalable Decision Making: Hybrid AI and optimization approaches designed to handle large-scale problems and tight decision windows with greater speed and reliability, including in supply chains, logistics, and manufacturing.
  • AI for Smarter Energy Systems: Advanced optimization solutions for the energy sector, addressing growing system complexity, uncertainty, and operational scale.
  • AI for More Intuitive Optimization Experiences: AI-driven capabilities that improve explainability, insight extraction, and productivity for optimization practitioners and decision makers.
  • AI for Natural and Assisted Interaction: Intelligent, GenAI-enabled capabilities (including assistants such as Gurobot) that enhance how users engage with optimization models and results.

Focus areas will evolve and grow as the Lab’s work progresses and new challenges emerge.

AI Innovation in Action

GAIL advances its work through a set of focused innovation initiatives. Each initiative explores a specific problem space, tests new approaches, and is evaluated against real-world constraints.
