10:30am GenAI and Optimization: Learnings and Opportunities

GenAI presents many promising opportunities, including in the field of mathematical optimization. At Gurobi, we have done a number of experiments and have developed a sense of what works, what is challenging, and where the long-term opportunities lie for this field. During this talk, we will share our view of the current state of GenAI and optimization, and do a live demo of several ways GenAI can be used to explain feasible and infeasible models.

11:00am Mathematical Optimization with Generative AI for Cross-Project Team Allocation and Scheduling

Cross-project team allocation and scheduling is a complex allocation problem faced by services-based industries with complicated rules for staffing project teams (e.g., management/technology consulting, utilities and aircraft maintenance, among others).  Such firms must assemble multi-role teams, align skills to demand, manage overlapping phases, and respect availability, leave, preferences, and development priorities. This session presents Bain & Company’s automated staffing engine built on multi-objective mixed-integer optimization using Gurobi. It assigns resources to multi-role teams on a rolling horizon, trading-off utilization, demand requirements, geographic needs, skill fit, fairness, preferences, and balancing across teams. Warm starts and targeted repair enable rapid replanning under portfolio volatility. To complement the optimization model, selective use of generative and agentic AI orchestrates scenario runs from the UI or via natural-language prompts. GenAI is also used to explain solution quality across multiple objective contributions and trade-offs. The session shares model design, architecture, Gurobi performance tweaks, and adoption lessons.

Alexander Hipolito is an Expert Senior Manager within Bain & Company’s AI, Insights, and Solutions Group in Manila specializing in the use of optimization and data science techniques for supply chain and workforce planning applications.  Prior to Bain, Alex worked as a Solution Architect for Supply Chain Optimization as well as Machine Learning solutions for Hewlett Packard in Singapore.  Alex has a Ph.D. in Industrial & Systems Engineering (Operations Research) from the University of Florida and holds industry certifications from ASCM (APICS Certified Supply Chain Professional) and INFORMS (Certified Analytics Professional - Expert).

Prior to joining Gurobi Iain worked at Oracle, Sun Microsystems and Amdahl where he ran numerous business development, product management, sales and technical-sales organisations. The biggest learning from his extensive involvement in the global IT market has been that the common denominator of successful and sustainable business is healthy (human) relationships that embrace diversity and celebrate inclusion. Outside of work Iain loves Australian Football, is a keen cyclist, a developing apiarist, an aspiring artist and holds a BA Soc.Sci. in Information Management from Melbourne University. Dr Jingfeng Yang holds a PhD in Computer Science from Singapore Management University. His doctoral thesis specifically explored the use of mathematical optimization (mixed-integer programming, heuristics) and machine learning to address data-driven operational problems such as resource allocation and vehicle routing in supply chain and urban logistics. Before joining Gurobi, Jingfeng honed his skills as a Research Scientist at A*STAR Singapore, contributing to the development of learning-based vehicle routing algorithms and participated in various industry collaboration projects on procurement and supply chain inventory optimization. He also gained brief experience as a quant researcher in a proprietary trading firm. Beyond his professional pursuits, Jingfeng is passionate about traveling, computer games, basketball, and watching movies and NBA.
