10:30am Optimizing Global Trade: Tackling the Challenge of Empty Container Repositioning with Advanced Operational Research

At TetriXX, we tackle the critical challenge of empty container repositioning for the leading shipping lines. For container carriers, empty container repositioning is a non-revenue-generating operation but a costly necessity to meet customer demand. Moreover, in port regions, a more efficient repositioning system not only reduces operational costs but also helps alleviate congestion and lower emissions. In our initial proof of concept (POC), we developed T-Positioning, leveraging open source solvers to optimize container movements. Building on this success, we explored the potential of Gurobi’s advanced optimization capabilities to enhance our solution. This presentation will demonstrate how integrating Gurobi significantly improved performances, paving the way for impactful operational and environmental outcomes.

Iain Jardin has been working with customers and partners in APAC, EMEA and North America for the last 30 years. Prior to joining Gurobi Iain worked at Oracle, Sun Microsystems and Amdahl where he ran numerous business development, product management, sales and technical-sales organisations. The biggest learning from his extensive involvement in the global IT market has been that the common denominator of successful and sustainable business is healthy (human) relationships that embrace diversity and celebrate inclusion. Outside of work Iain loves Australian Football, is a keen cyclist, a developing apiarist, an aspiring artist and holds a BA Soc.Sci. in Information Management from Melbourne University. Dr. Steven Edwards completed his PhD at Monash University in the field of discrete optimization. His thesis was motivated by the scheduling of automated pathology testing systems used for the diagnosis of cancers and infectious diseases. As part of his research, he developed a modeling framework for efficiently solving large-scale optimization problems using constraint programming inspired by existing techniques in boolean satisfiability and mixed-integer programming. After completing his thesis, Steven worked briefly at the Australian Bureau of Statistics on optimization problems in data security before commencing as a Research Fellow in Operations Research at the University of Melbourne.

Before co-founding OAT, he spent 5 years as a Senior Optimization Specialist at AIMMS and 8 years at IBM/ILOG, designing industry-specific solutions. With over a decade of consulting experience, Shouwei excels at applying mathematical models to solve real-world business challenges, enabling clients to harness optimization for data-driven decisions. He holds a Master’s in Operations Research from the Singapore MIT Alliance and a Master’s in Engineering Physics from Tsinghua University.
